Ecology, art, and the places that shape us

Ethos Landscape Design is a one-person practice led by Joe, working from North Yorkshire with projects across the UK.

Joe at work

Two landscapes, one practice

Growing up in Cambridgeshire and spending long periods in southern Spain, I've been shaped by both the gentle English countryside and the rugged Mediterranean landscape that still inspires me today.

The distinct architecture and ecology of the places I've travelled shape my design approach, ensuring each project fits harmoniously within its wider landscape. My work is guided by a deep interest in ecology, history, and art, and by the need to respond to the climate and biodiversity crisis.

Services

What's included

Most projects are built around the core design service. Where a garden benefits from extra detail, I offer extensions that deepen the final design.

Core Design Service

This core service forms the basis of all projects.

  • Initial consultation
  • Site survey & analysis
  • Concept through to final design
  • 10 high-quality visuals
  • Construction plans and detailing
  • Support for project handover

Design Extensions

Where appropriate, these extensions can be added.

  • Detailed planting design
  • Lighting design with 10 night-time visuals
  • Video walkthrough

How Projects Proceed

For most gardens, the core service is sufficient. Where appropriate, I recommend extensions to ensure the design package is clear for both client and contractor. Throughout, I remain communicative, ensuring the garden we design is the garden that is delivered.

The process

How we work together

From first conversation to final handover, every project follows a clear path. You'll know what's happening at each stage, and when.

Step 01

VisionBoard

Begin with a free VisionBoard: answer five short questions about your space and receive a personalised moodboard within 24 hours. The ideal starting point if you're still exploring possibilities.

Step 02

Initial Meeting

I will visit your home to discuss your hopes for your garden, sharing initial ideas as we walk the site and explore design opportunities that suit your lifestyle.

Step 03

Site Survey

I will survey the site for dimensions, undertake drainage tests, take soil samples for pH testing and take notes on the fluctuating light levels as well as other factors.

Step 04

Concept Design

The concept design depicts the layout of the proposed garden, showing different areas such as seating, paths, and planting zones, giving you a clear picture of the direction.

Step 05

Final Design

The refined design with high-quality rendered images and a video walkthrough as well as construction plans. Adjustments can be made and presented again if necessary.

Step 06

Project Handover

You will receive a shortlist of contractors to undertake the construction. I will communicate with them to ensure the design is created exactly as agreed.
