Joseph Richardson

My childhood was spent in the garden of my family home within the gentle English countryside. I also spent a lot of time in the rugged landscape of Southern Spain. These landscapes gave me a lasting belief that a place can stay with you for the rest of your life. Each environment has its own conditions, and each requires a different approach. Gardens are no different.

I believe that a well-designed garden has to work for the person who lives in it but it also has to work for the land it sits on. A decade of designing and working in gardens taught me that when those two things are in balance, the result is always beautiful, memorable, and unique.

It brings me happiness to help create places which shape people.

Services

What's included

Most projects are built around the core design service. Where a garden benefits from extra detail, I offer extensions that deepen the final design.

Core Design Package

This forms the basis of all projects.

  • Initial Consultation
  • Site Survey & Analysis
  • Concept Design through to Final Masterplan
  • High Quality Visuals
  • Support for project handover to contractor

Design Package Extensions

Where appropriate, these extensions can be added.

  • Planting Plan
  • Lighting Plan with visuals
  • Video Walkthrough

How Projects Proceed

For most gardens, the core service is sufficient. Where appropriate, I recommend extensions to ensure the design package is clear for both client and contractor. Throughout, I remain communicative, ensuring the garden we design is the garden that is delivered.

The process

How we work together

From first conversation to final handover, every project follows a clear path. You'll know what's happening at each stage, and when.

Step 01

VisionBoard

Begin with a free VisionBoard: answer five short questions about your space and receive a personalised moodboard within 24 hours. The ideal starting point if you're still exploring possibilities.

Step 02

Initial Meeting

I will visit your home to discuss your hopes for your garden, sharing initial ideas as we walk the site and explore design opportunities that suit your lifestyle.

Step 03

Site Survey

I will survey the site for dimensions, undertake drainage tests, take soil samples for pH testing and take notes on the fluctuating light levels as well as other factors.

Step 04

Concept Design

The concept design depicts the layout of the proposed garden, showing different areas such as seating, paths, and planting zones, giving you a clear picture of the direction.

Step 05

Final Design

The refined design with high-quality rendered images and a video walkthrough as well as construction plans. Adjustments can be made and presented again if necessary.

Step 06

Project Handover

You will receive a shortlist of contractors to undertake the construction. I will communicate with them to ensure the design is created exactly as agreed.
